Lulu works at the grocery store. For the sake of her privacy, I won't disclose the exact location. I will say, though, that I most frequently encounter her in the express lane. Never having worked at a grocery store, I don't know if the same people are regularly assigned to the express lane (perhaps the most efficient workers?), or if it is just the luck of the draw -- which makes me wonder if it would be more or less desirable to work in the express lane, but that's a digression I don't care to take at the moment.
Back to Lulu. She baffles me. She appears to be fairly withdrawn, speaking as little as possible. Maybe she thinks Lulu is a funny name, and so she is embarassed to talk. More likely she's just shy, or perhaps the banality of the job has transformed her into a robot.
The other day I went to the store with my brother and Brian Farr. We were buying supplies for a party, and we ended up in Lulu's line (which must not have been an express lane, given the quantity of items we were buying). Brian was flirting with her (Brian flirts with most every female), and we were all acting fairly silly -- which is just how we tend to act when in a group. Lulu laughed at a few things we said, and even favored us with some smiles.
But then I saw her again, more recently, and she was back to normal. I didn't make any special effort to converse with her, though. Maybe I should have. But I was only buying three items, and I didn't want to hold up the express lane.
